Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt was selected by President Theodore Roosevelt to design the $2.50 and $5.00 Indian Head gold coins. Similar to the $5.00 Indian Head, the front surface of the coin represents the first Native American, while the reverse shows the American Eagle. The $2.50 Indian Head is unique to the rest of the American coins, because it was made using a technique called incuse relief.
