Under the authorization of the U.S. Congress, the United States Mint began production of the $5.00 Liberty gold coin (also referred to as the Half Eagle) on April 2, 1792. This particular coin has undergone several design changes throughout its history. One of the last designs of the $5.00 Liberty or Coronet was minted between 1839 and 1908, when the $5.00 Indian gold coin was introduced to the public.
