In 1921, the Mexican 50 Peso gold coin was issued to acclaim the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. Also known as the Centenario, this gold coin is 20% larger than the 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin. The obverse features an image of a Winged Victory, with a laurel wreath in her right hand and a broken chain in her left. When Americans retrieved the right to own gold bullion on December 31, 1974, the Mexican 50 Peso gold coins promptly became one of the gold bullion industry's standard carriers.
