The Three Dollar Gold coin, produced between 1854 and 1889 was intended to tie in with the U.S. Postal system. In that moment in history, a first class postage stamp cost three cents, and were sold in sheets of one hundred stamps. Therefore, the Three Dollar Gold coin became equivalent to one sheet of stamps. Despite this prospective use, the coins were minted in small quantities.
