Weight: 1.672 grams
Diameter: 13.00 mm
The Type 1 Gold Dollar first made its appearance in 1849 and made its name as the smallest coin in U.S. History. Measuring only 13 millimeters in diameter, the Type 1 Gold Dollar features the crowned image of Miss Liberty encircled by 13 stars, which symbolize the 13 original colonies. The Type 1 dollars are very rare in high mint state grades. Many Americans complained about its small size, because it was difficult to keep track of it. Losing this one dollar coin was equivalent to losing an entire days wage for most Americans. In 1856, Longacre attempted another design in order to satisfy the Americans' request.
